Coming Soon – Show n’ Tell

ShownTell1

Exactly next week, my friend Tanyia (@Domestic Deficit Disorder) and I will start our weekly “Show n’ Tell”.
We love to share with you our weekly favorites from Pinterest, Flickr, Instagram, Facebook or from Blogs. There are so many wonderful creative people out there, and we just want to mention them on our blogs. So each friday Tanyia and I will both share our 6 favorites on our blogs. And you can trust us, we are best friends, but this doesnt mean that we will show the same. To tell the truth, we have really different taste, about colors, fabric, placement, just everything and thats what makes this project so amazing. You have to wait one more week. So, see you on August 22nd.

Featuring August Queen Bee – One Wee Bird

CompassLogoCircle2
At the beginning of August I joined my first ever bee group, the “Compass Quilters”. We took this name coz we are placed all over the world, USA, New Zealand, Australia, Austria & Italy. Each month I want to feature our queen bee and let her answer a few questions about her quilting life.
Our August queen bee is Rebecca @One Wee Bird and she choosed the “Humming Bird” block, by Rita @Red Pepper Quilts. Im totally low at low volume fabrics, so I used every thing could find in my small stash. And Im more than pleased with the result. such an easy and fast block.
So are my 2 finished 10 1/2” blocks.
2014-08-04 13.07.49
And now its time for Rebecca to answer a few questions, about her quilting journey.
Rebecca

1) When did you start quilting?
I started quilting about 12 years ago and am self taught, as in I've never been to a class, simply because there weren't any available at the time locally. I was an avid cross stitcher and then moved onto also making handmade Bears out of Mohair.....I obviously had alot of free time way back then.My boys were all little and I didn't work so naptime and evenings were spent furiously hand stitching, then I found quilting and a whole new monster was unleashed into my life!
2) What other hobbys beside quilting, do you have?
None now really, except gardening ...there simply are not enough hours in the day with a toddler and teenage boys and a job LOL
3) What is your favourite color?
Turquoise....but if you looked in my wardrobe it would be black?
4) Which season do you like best, and why?
I have two actually, Spring and Autumn. Where I live it is quite mild temperature wise, we can get up to 30 degrees Celsius in the middle of Summer but in Winter it rarely dips below 5.
So in the Spring and Autumn we have the most beautiful cloudless days with crisp air and amazing flowers in the Spring and gorgeous leaf changes in the Autumn.
5) What is your favorite color? Which one do you use the most in your quilting projects?
I had to think about this one, although my favourite colour is Turquoise and I've made quite a few quilts for my wee one that feature it, the colour I use most is White.
But my favourites are really the sherbet combinations,pink/orange/turquoise/lemon...thats why I loooove Kaffe Fassett's paperweight in lime
6) Your favorite quilting project/quilt?
That's like asking which is my favourite child? Each one I make becomes my new favourite, but I've really noticed that since Mr OWB passed this year it's definitely the ones he favoured or passed a comment about that I've become quite partial to.
He really like some of the eye popping bright ones like my Sarah Fielke Stars
 10548399683_05b9e0cbcd_k
and Sea Stars, which is still on our bed but starting to fade a little
  11122135304_979531c4df_k
and he also picked the border for this one
 10548132745_bb469bf191_k
What I want to know is, will I get to the end of my Quilty bucket list before I am smothered in Quilts!!???
7) Tell us something about you, we dont already know.
OOOh there are lots of things but do I want to share my weirdness (as my boys say...I like to think I'm quirky)
My great great Uncle was Roald Amunsden who beat Scott to the Pole, I can remember friends and relatives phone numbers from 30+ years ago...weird, can't always tell you today's date!! I'm 5ft 3" and the tallest of the females in my family (2 sisters and mum) and I have a slight OCD issue with vacuuming....I have been known to vacuum more than twice a day.
I also know the lyrics to far too many songs from the fifties and sixties....I blame my parents for obviously not playing the right decade's music when I was growing up!!

Thank you so much for taking the time Rebbeca and answering my questions, and I really hope you enjoy the blocks I sent you.

Quilt Design A Day – July 8 to 14

I want to show you my second week with “Quilt Design A Day”, some of them are a bit complex and some look really weird. But I dont mind, coz I really enjoy the design process. I still dont do them every day. Some days I think of catching up on my design seeds, but there is just no inspiration, and I quit without saving what I design. And then waiting some days and everything goes smoothly on its own. One design after the other, with a lot I really love and also would love to see made into quilts.

Chasing Posies – Throw Pillow Tutorial

PillowTutorial_Top2
I thought while I’m on vacation, I can bring you a tutorial for my brand new “Chasing Posies” pillows, I created last week as presents for my grandma and her sister.
What you will need:

5 different prints (of course you can make just solids too or mix them up)
Coordinating thread
Batting and backing for quilting
Basting pins or spray
20” pillow form
Rotary cutter, quilt ruler, scissors, pins, pencil, fabric marking pen

Cutting Instructions:
5x 4.5” squares from A, C, D
6x 4.5” squares from B, E
2x 4” squares from E
1x 4” square from B
PillowTutorial_1
Step 1:
Pair 2 B’s with 2 E’s, then randomly pair all the rest so that no two are the same. Then mark your squares diagonal on the back. And sew two 1/4” lines on both sides of the marked line (pictured underneath).
PillowTutorial_2

Step 2:
After sewing, cut your squares apart on the marked line. Press your seams open, or to one side (whatever you prefer). Then trim all your HST’s to 4”.
Step 3:
Lay out your HST’s and the squares like pictures below.
 PillowTutorial_3
Step 4:
Now sew your HST’s & squares together row by row. For this step I photographed my layout, so I would remember where I placed which fabric and then I pinned all 5 HSTs (or squares) in each row together.
Step 5:
Sew your rows together.
Step 6:
Make a quilt sandwhich and quilt your pillow front as desired. I echo quilted my first pillow (shown in the top pic on the left) and quilted straight lines on my second pillow (shown in the top pic on the right).
Step 7:
Finish your pillow with a 20” backing and a zipper on the bottom.
PillowTutorial_back2014-08-04 15.00.03
Step 8:
Enjoy and snuggle with your new throw pillow on your couch.

I love to see what you whip up with my tutorial. Please share on Instagram or Flickr #piecedwithlovexoxo

Nail Polish Pouches - I got totally addicted by them, when I saw the new nail polish pattern at the fat quarter shop blog. And had immediately make my own. The pattern was just too big, so I made it up myself in EQ7 and paper pieced it. The little pouch is just 3.5” x 5.5” and holds 3 nail polish inside. I just couldnt go to bed until I finished this cute pouch, a thing I normally dont do. I really need my sleep. So yesterday morning I decided to make a bigger one, this time I paper pieced it 6” x 8”. I love them both and most I love that I had the perfect zipper colors in my stash for them.

Quilt Design A Day – July 1 to 7

When Anne @Play Crafts posted about Quilt Design A Day about 3 month ago, I immediately joined the facebook group. Totally impressed by the wonderful creations they came up each day from the daily  Design Seed inspiration pictures.
I was just there to look at the wonderful designs, far too shy to post anything. Until Amy @ Badskirt told us to just go ahead and show our creations. And thats when it all started.
Normally the challenge is to sit down each day for about 15 to 20 minutes and get inspired by one of the two Design Seed inspirations. It worked for me a few days and then I had a big break. But I thought all of this was an amazing idea to get creative and try different styles, so I started to play catch up with the designs. From now on I will show you each monday my designs I created in photoshop or EQ7. Some days Im totally in love with my creations, and want to sew them up, on other days, I can draw around, but wont be happy with the endresults.
My favorite design was on July 2nd, and I loved it so much, that it will be sewn up in the next month. I know you are curious, but be patient. I will show it when its finished.
